Breakfast on the Brandywine
January 16-November 20, 2011
Now through November 20, visitors can enjoy breakfast with a view at the Brandywine River Museum, which is offering free admission on Sunday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
The cafeteria-style restaurant features floor-to-ceiling windows and breathtaking views of the Brandywine River. The menu will change each Sunday and the cost of $5 per person includes juice and coffee, tea or milk. A child's breakfast is also available for $3.50.
Romance in Conflict: N.C. Wyeth and the Civil War opens at the museum on January 22 and continues through March 20. Throughout his career, Wyeth was commissioned to paint Civil War subjects as illustrations, murals and even calendar pictures. Despite their different uses, these images presented the war-battles, soldiers and civilians-in a romantic, heroic manner which reflected a national desire to focus on duty, loyalty and bravery. The exhibition examines how Wyeth prepared for these commissions and how, sometimes creating a picture at odds with its text, he portrayed the war as a courageous struggle and the combatants as noble warriors. Also on view will be Illustrations of the Civil War, featuring many fine examples from the museum's collections, including works by Alonzo Chappel, Harry Fenn, Winslow Homer and Howard Pyle.
