Tempesta di Mare’s Philadelphia concert series continues on January 29 and 30 with Roman Nights: cantatas and concertos by Handel and Scarlatti. Soprano Clara Rottsolk joins the Chamber Players for this program, which includes selections from Tempesta di Mare’s most recent release on Chandos Records.

Wendy Heller, award-winning Princeton professor and fellow of the American Academy in Rome, will give the pre-concert talks. Music in Baroque Rome was a private affair, driven into the luxurious homes of wealthy patrons by a Papal ban on public performances. But inside those private palaces it flourished, with patrons deploying their private stables of composers, singers and instrumentalists to produce frequent musical entertainments for gatherings of the cognoscenti. The resulting music was sophisticated, dramatic, playful, virtuosic, innovative and full of celebrations of love in all of its forms.
