Art-at-Lunch: Pittsburgh’s Painter Takes Paris: Henry Ossawa Tanner and France
April 13, 2011
The son of a former slave and an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Bishop, Henry Ossawa Tanner grew up in Philadelphia just after the Civil War, part of an educated and cultured African American elite. Trained at PAFA under the tutelage of Thomas Eakins and deeply influenced by his connection with the AME church, Tanner would go on to become one of the most renowned American artists living in France. In anticipation of the Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit exhibition opening at PAFA in January 2012, and in conjunction with PIFA celebrations, curator Anna O. Marley will discuss the works Tanner made in Paris and the French Countryside in the 1910s.
