Art-at-Lunch: The Best Art Training I Ever Had: Ivan Albright and World War I
March 23, 2011
In the winter of 1918, 21-year old Ivan Albright enlisted in the U.S. Army and for the next nine months, rendered the new nature of wounds in World War I for fascinated surgeons, documenting the healing process in patients before, during and after treatment. A decade later, in a profile for the Chicago Daily News, Albright called his World War I experience “the best art training I ever had,” and Robert Cozzolino explores the way in which the war affected Albright’s philosophical concerns and his unusual approach towards representation.
