Art-at-Lunch: Painting in a Foreign Language
March 16, 2011
Alex Kanevsky, artist and PAFA faculty member, renders light and atmosphere through brushwork and coloristic nuance, conveying flesh through shifting pinks, purples and greens, and using layer upon layer of paint to capture the multiplicity of realities present in the contemporary moment. He is ultimately interested in the grand tradition of painting--unselfconscious of its place, unapologetic about the results. If painting is a form of language, Kanevsky attempts to create a language, foreign to all but himself and then say a few things in that language in such a way that would make them clear to anybody who listens, even if the language remains foreign to the observers.
