Against The Tide
January 24, 2011
Part of the Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival's acclaimed Documentaries & Dialogue series. Against the Tide sheds light on the role of the Roosevelt Administration during the Holocaust. Highlighting a rare 1977 interview with the young activist Peter Bergson, we learn of Bergson’s resolve in challenging Washington and the American-Jewish establishment. Why wasn’t the rescue of six million European Jews the top-priority for Jews living in the United States? Why was it easier to glean support from non-Jewish members of Congress and Jewish Hollywood personalities, such as Ben Hecht, Edward G. Robinson and Paul Muni? With depictions of the doomed Jews of Europe and the leaders of Polish Jewry whose faith in America proved futile, this important historic testimonial should not be missed. Directed by Richard Trank, 98 minutes. New Speaker Announcement: Post-film Q&A with Dr. Thomas Childers, Sheldon and Lucy Hackney Professor of History, University of Pennsylvania.
