Dogo Wazo is a progressive jazz quintet that uses a unique blend of instrumental melodies of modern and past generations. As their name "Dogo Wazo" means "Small Thought" in Swahili, their ideas show precise and specific themes to reveal motion and feeling in each tune. Dogo Wazo has played throughout the greater Philadelphia region at various clubs, concert halls, private parties and restaurants. The group, together since 2007, feels a special connection to the local community as they started out playing for fundraisers and charities. The group is composed of Jason Matthews on piano, an undergraduate at University of Miami's Frost School of music, Matt Block on trumpet, an undergraduate at Brown University, Will Berry on drums, an undergraduate at UVA, Alex Claffy on bass, an undergraduate at New School, and Michael Stephenson, an undergraduate at New School. This is the first time they will perform live together in over a year.
