LECTURES & LITERATURE

Reading Group: Uncle Tom's Cabin
March 23-May 25, 2011
Harriet Beecher Stowe’s book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, was the bestselling novel of the 19th century. This reading group will discuss why the novel proved so powerful for its readers, creating fervent admirers and equally vehement critics. Led by Peter Schmidt, the Chair of the Department of English Literature at Swarthmore College and a specialist in American literature, the group will consider the role of literature as an agent of social change.
