Bar Mitzvah Film Screening
February 2, 2011
USA, 1935, 75 minutes, B&W. Yiddish with new English subtitles. Directed by Henry Lynn. Yiddish stage star Boris Thomashefsky only made one appearance in Yiddish film, the comedy Bar Mitzvah. Come see this rarely seen film, just restored and available for the first time from the National Center for Jewish Film. Believing his wife lost at sea, Israel (Thomashefsky) remarries a scheming gold-digger. Shock, tears and laughs abound when his beloved wife returns on the eve of her son's bar mitzvah after a ten-year absence. This musical melodrama is a masterwork of shund, the bread and butter of the Yiddish theater.
