Nahma Sandrow, one of the world1s leading Yiddish theater scholars and translators dives into the history of Yiddish theater with this free public lecture. Many American immigrant communities created their own theaters in their own languages. These theaters preserved cultural traditions and ties to home while simultaneously moving audiences forward toward Americanization. Exploring parallels with Mexican, German, Chinese, Italian, Polish and other foreign-language American theaters, the lecture shows how this creative tension between old and new produced energy and art. Co-sponsored by the Jewish Studies Program of the University of Pennsylvania.
