Remnants of a City: Leroy Johnson’s Philadelphia showcases the prolific paintings and "street remnant” sculptures of lifelong Philadelphian Leroy Johnson. Miniature street scenes created with found objects are juxtaposed against paintings layered over salvaged movie posters, highlighting the artist’s daily journey along the Market-Frankford line. Together, these pieces will transform the gallery walls of Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens into a cityscape of recycled materials and urban debris. This exhibition reveals an ongoing fascination with—and visual love letter to—his beloved city. Remnants of a City bears witness to the community's perpetual growth and decay, weaving a powerful, intensely personal story. Boldly wrestling topics such as racism, violence, oppression and the need for creative expression, Johnson captures the grit of Philadelphia and offers hope for its future.
