Art-at-Lunch: Elizabeth Sparhawk-Jones: Painting on the Pulse
February 23, 2011
PAFA-trained American artist Elizabeth Sparhawk-Jones (1885-1968) thrived in her early years as an artist, winning awards, succeeding in international competitions, and selling her American impressionism-style paintings for a small fortune. And then, she disappeared. Barbara Lehman Smith, author of Elizabeth Sparhawk-Jones: The Artist Who Lived Twice, shares the painter’s riveting story of going from New York Times’ “find of the year” in 1908 to an insane asylum patient, coming full circle again to glory in the 1940s when American Artist magazine heralded her as “a phenomenon in the world of paint” for her dramatically different painting style, something she called “painting on the pulse”.
