Rosenbach Musician-in-Residence Dave Burrell returns to the intimate Denworth Room to perform Portraits of Civil War Heroes, a suite of five new compositions commissioned by the Rosenbach to commemorate the Civil War Sesquicentennial. His new works focus on prominent figures from the early days of the war, including John Brown. The Civil War Begins, an exhibition featuring original documents relating to the causes and opening confrontations of the war, is on view through July 17, 2011. Dave Burrell is a distinguished composer-pianist of singular stature on the contemporary international music scene. His performance schedule includes jazz festivals in America and Europe, including the Le Mans Jazz Festival. Over the last thirty years, Burrell has performed on over 115 recordings, 30 under his own name. He has received numerous awards, including the John Garcia Gensel Award and the Pew Fellowship in Jazz Composition.
