After toiling for years playing exotic, often evil, vamps and femme fatales (e.g., Boris Karloff’s depraved daughter in The Mask of Fu Manchu), this is the film that made Myrna Loy a star, and in so doing won her the unofficial appellation of “the perfect wife.”

In this classic rendition of Dashiell Hammett's sophisticated and funny murder mystery, she is teamed with William Powell as Nick and Nora Charles, a rough-and-tumble ex-detective par excellence and his willing, witty socialite wife. The resultant extremely successful production led to them becoming one of Hollywood's top romantic couples (many thought they were married in real life – not so) and to one of the most successful film series ever. In this first caper they, Nick and Nora, along with their dog, Asta, and an excellent supporting cast, including Maureen O'Sullivan, Cesar Romero, Nat Pendleton and many other familiar faces, tackle the disappearance of a famous inventor.
