Join us as we launch our 2011 Winter Lecture Series with “New Jersey’s Pine Barrens – A Brief Summary of Their Natural and Unnatural History.” As we drive through them today on our way to the seashore resorts, the Pine Barrens seem to be an endless stretch of undeveloped pineland wilderness, seemingly undisturbed from the dawn of time. However, the pines have been subjected to wave upon wave of exploitation, from lumbering, the extraction of naval stores through iron extraction, and glass making, to charcoaling and berry production. Only in relatively recent times have these pine woods come under the stewardship of an intergovernmental agency that protects and preserves them for future generations. After a brief overview of the ecology of this unique ecosystem we will review its exploitation and remnants of the industries that have utilized its resources.
