The Parkway Central Library presents Dr. Mariana Chilton, Assistant Professor of Drexel’s School of Public Health and Principal Investigator of the Philadelphia GROW Project, and Director of Witnesses to Hunger, her highly publicized national photo exhibit. Dr. Chilton’s Witness to Hunger project provided economically disadvantaged mothers with cameras to document their lives and those of their children. With their knowledge and firsthand experience of raising a child on a limited income, the photographers of the project, mothers and caregivers of young children made use of digital cameras to frame the issues most important to them and to their families. Chilton believes that all too often, policies and programs are created without the participation of the people who are most affected. Displaying their photographs and describing their life experiences, the mothers met with policymakers and worked to bring change to their own communities in the process. Chilton appears as part of a new series that partners Drexel University scholars and the Free Library of Philadelphia entitled, Two Way Think.
