The Olmstead Legacy
November 4, 2010
The achievements and philosophy of the 19th-century visionary urban planner and landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, will spark an exciting fundraising event hosted by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The program will feature a screening of The Olmsted Legacy, a one-hour documentary about the creator of New York’s Central Park, followed by a reception in the museum’s new Granite Hill Restaurant operated by Stephen Starr. The Olmsted Legacy writer/producer Rebecca Messner will be on hand to talk about the documentary. The Olmsted Legacy is being screened in a number of cities to draw attention to Olmsted’s work and the important role parks play in creating vital cities. Olmsted’s firm worked on the designs of many parks in the area, including FDR Park and Marconi Plaza in South Philadelphia; Pastorius Park in Chestnut Hill; Washington Square in Center City; and other portions of Fairmount Park. The local screening is being underwritten by a grant from the Speedwell Foundation.
