Rittenhouse: The Gilded Age Square
October 10, 2010
The Philadelphia Art Alliance is pleased to announce part 3 of our newest series, Philadelphia Squared. Continuing in our new dedication to the advancement and appreciation of contemporary craft and design, PAA will host a series of 5 lectures exploring the history, design and architectural features of Philadelphia’s 5 main squares, now known as Washington, Franklin, Rittenhouse, Logan (circle) and Penn Square.
Thomas H. Keels, local historian and author of Wicked Philadelphia: Sin in the City of Brotherly Love, will present a lecture on the development of PAA's home base, Rittenhouse Square. The humble beginnings of Rittenhouse Square, as a home to Philadelphia's brick-making industry, lay in stark contrast to its current, and well-deserved, perception as a home to Philadelphia's cultural elite. Mr. Keels will lead patrons on a historic journey through the square's many stages of development, as well as the planning successes and failures experienced by our beloved home over its 300+ year history.
