The Wagner Free Institute of Science presents “The Experiments of Edgar Allan Poe”, an illustrated presentation by Dr John Tresch, Assistant Professor of History & Sociology of Science at the University of Pennsylvania. Edgar Allan Poe is usually thought of as a fantasist, more at home in the realm of imagination than the world of fact and reason. Yet many of his tales of mystery and the grotesque show the impact of the scientific and technological discoveries of his day. Poe’s literary experiments reflect–and critique–a society being transformed by science and industry. This talk will reveal a lesser-known side of Poe, from his scientific training as a cadet at West Point to his early science journalism, and invention of new, scientifically-influenced literary genres. Come early to explore the Wagner’s National Historic Landmark building and unparalleled collections.
