Cabiria, dir. Giovanni Pastrone, Italy, 1914, 16mm, 116 mins, b/w, silent w/ English and Italian intertitles.
This famous historical epic takes place during the struggle for supremacy between Rome and Carthage in the second Punic War. Cabiria, daughter of a Roman family, is sold into slavery in Carthage and destined to be sacrificed to the pagan god Moloch. She escapes with the help of a gigantic Roman slave, Maciste. Elaborate sets, spectacular battle sequences employing thousands of extras, and the use of process shot contributed the grandeur of this film. The traveling shot, used to follow action, isolate characters, and emphasize the depth perspective of sets was then considered revolutionary and came to known as the “Cabiria movement”.
