Walking into an art museum can be an intimidating experience for both novice and aficionado. This course provides an introduction to a way of “looking at pictures” based on the idea that art lives or dies on its ability both to arouse the intellect and touch people where they live. Using works of art largely drawn from the Michener’s collection, the discussion will focus on major categories of artistic expression—landscape, abstraction, portraiture, narrative, and symbol. Through discussion, analysis, and interactive play, the class helps people become more conscious of the language artists use to communicate their thoughts and feelings. The informal guide for this visual journey will be poet Rainer Maria Rilke, especially his book Letters on Cezanne (North Point Press, 2002, translated by Joel Agee), which class members are instructed to purchase and read in advance.
