Simon McBurney and his theatre company, Complicite, produce a groundbreaking work that embraces the universal relevance of math. The narrative crosses continents and even the bounds of time in its retelling of early twentieth-century mathematicians G. H. Hardy and Srinivasa Ramanujan’s friendship. Inspired by Hardy’s A Mathematician’s Apology, McBurney incorporates a modern day story of a man mourning the loss of his lover who had set off across India retracing Ramanujan’s steps. An instant hit, A Disappearing Number won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play (2008), the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Play (2007) and The Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for Best New Play (2007).
