WayGayU: Creating a Space for Ourselves: An Historical Walking Tour of Philadelphia’s Gayborhood
October 9, 2010
You will begin in Rittenhouse Square, home base for 50s beatniks, rebels and queers, then trace the expansion of those “Spruce Street boys” up “Lurid Locust” to form a gay identified oasis in the center of Frank Rizzo’s repressive Philadelphia. The tour guide talk about bars, community spaces and political activism, have coffee at a gayborhood cafe and end the day with a visit to the extensive collections of the William Way Center’s John J. Wilcox Jr. Library and Archives. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Cameras are encouraged. Bob has worked as a walking tour guide in Center City for 10 years, heads the archival collections at the WWCC, and directs his own historical dance company, “Mixed Pickles Vintage Dance”.
