PAFA presents its first exhibition exploring the complex, witty, and unexpected nature of artistic identity in an exhibition of self-portraits and portraits of artists. Narcissus in the Studio will celebrate this important strength of PAFA’s permanent collection while revealing the creative process in an interactive studio within the gallery. That latter feature will include a working studio in the Fisher Brooks Gallery in which an artist makes self-portraits during the run of the exhibition. Visitors will be able to try their hand at self representation at set times. Combining old favorites, such as Charles Willson Peale’s The Artist in His Museum with works by contemporary Philadelphians such as Daniel Heyman, Rob Matthews, Mia Rosenthal, and Samantha Simpson, the exhibition promises to be full of surprises, offering fresh looks at familiar faces. An illustrated catalogue, written by Robert Cozzolino with contributions by artists Joe Fig and Sarah McEneaney, and scholar Jonathan Walz will accompany the show.
