LECTURES & LITERATURE

Stern (1962) by Bruce Jay Friedman
November 17, 2010
In the vein of Philip Roth comes Bruce Jay Friedman's satiric Stern, a look at the 1960s Jewish pilgrimage to American suburbs. Stern and his family have just moved to the burbs, but their idyllic transition into middle-class life is thrown into chaos when a neighbor shoves Stern's wife and calls his son "a kike". In this funny, wild and sometimes absurd novel, Stern tries to make sense of his Jewish identity while living in white Middle-America.
