City or Suburb?: American Jews and Urban Ambivalence with speaker Lila Corwin Berman Brunch
November 7, 2010
After World War II, American Jews moved rapidly to the suburbs and, on many counts, embraced them. Many mid-twentieth-century Jews believed being Jewish made most sense in the city, but feared cities were spaces of deterioration, potentially compromising success and well being. Temple University professor Lila Corwin Berman will explore the ambivalence Philadelphia Jews felt about dislodging their homes and institutions from the city. For anyone who grew up in Philadelphia, this brunch is sure to strike a chord.
