Classic images of the artist include the lone figure working tirelessly in the unheated garret and the bohemian sitting in cafes with fellow artists. Creative practice is actually a dynamic between these two worlds: the dedicated concentration on an artistic vision and a community that inspires and encourages that vision. Danielle Bursk: Between the Studio and Facebook, Curated by Chuck Thurow, is actually two exhibitions that investigate this dynamic. In the first, you see Danielle’s large, serene abstractions--suggestive of objects or landscape. The work speaks of concentration and obsession that fits our first image of the artist in the garret. There is, however, a humanity in the work that overwhelms any inclination to pass the work off as simply a technical tour de force created by a recluse. The second exhibition examines this part of Danielle’s life: her arts community. Today with Facebook, web pages, and other personal media, ones artistic circle can be even broader and richer than stereotypical sidewalk café.
