Oh wondrous power! How little understood, Entrusted to the mother's mind alone, To fashion genius, form the soul for good, Inspire a West, train a Washington! So penned Sarah Josepha Hale, one of the many hard-working, inspirational women buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery. An active champion of women's rights (but NOT the right to vote!), Hale was also of the opinion that ''no influence is so powerful as that of the mother.'' Join Friends of Laurel Hill in celebration of Mother's Day, to remember the achievements of Hale and the many other remarkable mothers now resting peacefully at Laurel Hill. Bring your parent or treat your own maternal self to a tour, followed by an informal tea in the Cemetery's historic Gatehouse.
