The Wagner Free Institute of Science presents its Westbrook Lecture 2009: BSI - The Case of the Disappearing Bees. Nearly 100 U.S. plants rely on the honey bee to survive and reproduce. The mysterious disappearance of one-third of these pollinators over the past year has focused attention on how little is known about our pollinators and how dependent we are upon them.

Dr. May R. Berenbaum, Professor and Head of the Department of Entomology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, discusses the pollinator crisis, the plight of the honey bees, and advances in entomology that provide hope for their future.

The Wagner Free Institute of Science began the Westbrook Free Lectureship in 1912 as a vehicle to encourage open discourse on controversial subjects, such as evolution. This program is part of the annual series. The museum is open from 12-4 pm. The lecture begins at 1 pm. This program is sign language interpreted.
