Sarah Daniels is Dean of Students at a small college in Vermont. She persuades a Nuyorican student to identify himself as ''Puerto Rican'' to qualify for a large scholarship and ends up pleading pragmatism in the face of his resentment. When one of the few African American students begins receiving hate mail, the campus erupts, first with shock, then with mutual recrimination as faculty and students alike try to prove their own tolerance by condemning one another. Sarah finds herself in the center of a storm of defensiveness and angry denunciations. Her self-examination leads to some surprising discoveries and painful insights, the consequences of which even she can't predict.
