Johannes String Quartet
March 29, 2009
The Johannes String Quartet, formed in 1998, brings together Soovin Kim, the first American to win the Paganini Competition in twenty-four years; Jessica Lee, First Prize winner in the 2005 Concert Artists Guild International Competition; Choong-Jin Chang, the associate principal viola of the Philadelphia Orchestra; and Peter Stumpf, the principal cello of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The Johannes, which has been hailed for each player's ability to ''know exactly when to lead, when to support'' (Andante), made its debut at Carnegie Hall in 2001. Each member has additionally spent numerous summers at the Marlboro Music Festival, birthplace of many of the world's renowned chamber ensembles. This evening's program features works by Salonen, Brahms, Webern and Mozart.
