With its roots in gospel, doo-wop and the sophisticated jazz-influenced singing groups of mid-century America, the powerhouse a cappella vocal group Take 6 is both a throwback to an earlier, more genteel era of African American music and a precursor for a number of black male pop groups of the ‘90s. Formed in 1980, this charismatic sextet sings in a contemporary style, integrating R&B and jazz influences into their devotional songs. Take 6 has 10 Grammy® wins, 10 Dove Awards, one Soul Train Award and two NAACP Image Award nominations and they’re famous for their collaborations with music icons such as Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Ray Charles, Queen Latifah, Brian McKnight and Quincy Jones.
