In the 2008 Democratic primaries, Barack Obama won 90 percent of the African-American vote despite a lack of support from established post-civil rights era leaders, who largely campaigned for Hillary Clinton.  Examining this paradigm shift within the new generation of black voters, William Jelani Cobb’s The Substance of Hope: Barack Obama and the Paradox of Progress debates how much—if at all—American society has changed with Barack Obama’s election to the American Presidency.  An associate professor of history at Spelman College and a featured commentator on National Public Radio, Cobb is the author of To the Break of Dawn and The Devil & Dave Chappelle and Other Essays.
