Back in 1999, James Maddock—then the lead singer of the band Wood—looked like he was on the verge of worldwide fame. Wood's debut album, Songs From Stamford Hill, was showcased on popular TV dramas such as Dawson's Creek, while Wood was touring with the likes of Paula Cole and Train. Now, at the end of the next decade, Maddock is back as a solo artist. Ten years after his debut, Maddock has created a heartbreakingly lovely debut solo album, Sunrise on Avenue C. His timeless songwriting style, which seems to draw from great songwriters of every era, conveys quiet confidence and lovely intimacy. Laura Tsaggaris's musical palette includes varied instrumentation, arrangements and genres. Her recently released sophomore disc, Keep Talking, underscores her creativity, from the rocker "Warning Signs" to the blues-inspired title track.
