Silent, Weird, Beautiful: Philadelphia's City Hall and Its Architect
May 20, 2010
The Wagner Free Institute of Science presents “Silent, Weird, Beautiful: Philadelphia’s City Hall and Its Architect,” an illustrated presentation by Dr. Michael J. Lewis, Faison-Pierson-Stoddard Professor of Art at Williams College. It is difficult to believe that two of Philadelphia’s most beloved buildings, City Hall and the Wagner Free Institute of Science, are the work of the same architect. One is a swaggering Baroque essay in civic pride, while the other is a subdued and stately temple of science. Together they suggest the enormous range of John McArthur, Jr., one of Philadelphia’s most influential and yet least known architects. Come early to explore the Wagner’s National Historic Landmark building and unparalleled collections. This program is part of the Institute’s evening lecture series, “Weeknights at the Wagner.”
