For struggling Depression-era writers like John Cheever, Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, and Zora Neale Hurston, the WPA Writer’s Project provided much-needed employment and financial stability. In Soul of a People, David Taylor narrates the intertwined experiences of these then-up-and-coming literary voices through first-hand accounts, striking images, and excerpts from selected WPA travel guides as they chronicled the American landscape. A contributor to the Washington Post and the author of Ginseng: the Divine Root, Taylor is a documentary scriptwriter whose work has aired on The Discovery Channel and other media outlets.
