 s foremost directors\, with attention paid to the elements of autobiograph
 y in Scorsese’s films\, as well as to the broader cultural critique he h
 as developed. We examine how his films have been informed by profound ques
 tions about violence\, alienation\, faith\, and genuine self-understanding
  (or self-delusion). In this light\, Scorsese’s films will be appraised\
 , having brought into American culture a shared vocabulary for discussing 
 the nature of freedom in America and the nature of responsibility in a\ncr
 iminal\, absurd\, or even fallen world.\nOur exploration will cover many f
 ilms\, including Raging Bull\, Mean Streets\, The Last Temptation of Chris
 t\, and The Departed. This four-week class is taught at Bryn Mawr Film Ins
 titute by Paul Wright\, Ph.D.\, Department of English\, Cabrini College.\n
