  century was accompanied by advances in many fields of scientific study. F
 ollowing an illustrated lecture focused on this age of discovery\, the gra
 vesites of some of Philadelphia's notable explorers\, inventors and scient
 ists will be visited\, among them: John Adolphus Dahlgren\, inventor of a 
 cannon bearing his name and the &ldquo\;Father of Naval Ordinance\;&rdquo\
 ; Robley Dunglison\, the personal physician to President Thomas Jefferson 
 and the &ldquo\;Father of American Physiology\;&rdquo\; Charles Ellet\, Jr
 .\, a civil engineer who was a pioneer in the construction of wire suspens
 ion bridges\, including the first at Fairmount\; Thomas Godfrey\, inventor
  of the sextant\; Ferdinand Hassler\, an explorer and the first superinten
 dent of the U.S. Coast Survey\; Elisha Kent Kane\, Arctic explorer\; Titia
 n Peale\, explorer and naturalist responsible for numerous illustrations o
 f butterflies and moths\; and Richard A.F. Penrose\, Jr.\, an economic geo
 logist who traveled to more than sixty countries to study their ore deposi
 ts. This lecture and walking tour will be led by Laurel Hill Cemetery guid
 e\, Jeff Wiernik. It will conclude with cookies and refreshments. With the
